Três Gigantes Vinho Verde
Três Gigantes – Three Giants – Vinho Verde draws its character from the ancient vine growing lands of northern Portugal, known for its lush green landscapes and production of light, fresh and vibrant wines.
Três Gigantes is sourced from the DOC of Melgaco – a noteworthy area in the Vinho Verde and home to around 49 independent wine estates. Located in northernmost Portugal the picturesque and fertile terrain around the Minho river adds depth and personality to wine production. The village of Moncão e Melgaco is bounded on the north and east by Rias Baixas, an acclaimed Spanish wine region, and has a rich history of winemaking dating back 700 years.
The Atlantic Ocean has a strong influence on the Moncão e Melgaco wine region, keeping it cool at night and in the morning, allowing grapes to ripen evenly while retaining perfume and character. The western mountains shield vineyards from the fierce winds of the Atlantic Ocean, creating a distinct microclimate in the region. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold and wet. The soils in the area are predominantly granite-based, the result of millions of years of erosion.
Três Gigantes is a blend of 65% Alvarinho and 35% Trajadura, vinified for 3 months in stainless steel.
Youthful and fresh with a slight effervescence. This wine has delicate aromas of blossom and melon. Light-bodied and crisp, the palate leads with citrus flavours, green apple and a touch of kiwi fruit.
About the Producer
Quintas de Melgaco
Quintas de Melgaço was created in 1990 by Amadeu Abílio Lopes, an industrialist who after working abroad returned to his homeland with a vision to highlight the region and the Alvarinho grape. Inviting growers into the consortium in 1996 Amadeu donated 68.8% of the Share Capital to the Municipality of Melgaço. The company was then fully born, uniting hundreds of small and medium-sized wine producers around a greater good: to promote the potential of the region’s wines and the Alvarinho grape variety.
530 producers from different farms are now represented who, through their care and delicacy, are focused on quality. Quintas de Melgaço is not a single house or a single production.
The secret to this quality lies on this human side. The hundreds of eyes dedicated to the vineyard, the hundreds of hands that face the natural hardships of those who make wine. They state they are “privileged” to have more than 530 producers. This is the best asset: the time and care always dedicated to what is done. Their proclamation is “We are not a wine producing land. Wine is us.”
