Seaglass Chardonnay

“The ocean gives us so much of what you taste in the glass. My job is to translate that coastal character in each wine we make.” Seaglass viticulturist Matt Frank

Seaglass takes its name from the shards of glass that are polished, over decades, into beautiful gems by the natural ebb and flow of wind, sea and fog. There is the search for a delightful discovery of a shimmering, one-of-a-kind jewel – be it in the sand or from the winery.

Their wines encapsulate the ocean air, the sandy coastline and the fresh acidity of cool-climate fruit along the Central Coast. Crafted from wind-swept vines that give nuanced flavours in the cellar and complex notes in the glass, the wines are an unmistakable expression of California’s coastal vineyards.

To preserve the vibrant coastal character of 95% Chardonnay and 5% Chenin grapes, the wine is crafted without any oak influence. Vinification in stainless steel tanks, without malolactic fermentation, allows the pure flavour of the fruit to shine through – capturing the cool-climate terroir of Central Coast at its best

About the Producer

Seaglass Wine Co.

Seaglass Wine Co. is based in California’s Central Coast. Stretching 250 miles south from San Francisco Bay to Santa Barbara County, the region’s 90,000 acres of vineyards and diverse topography are woven together by a single common thread: proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The undeniable influence of the sea fogs and cool breezes reaches some 25 miles inland to cool the vines, giving this region its signature warm days and cool nights and helps form California’s longest growing season.

Their premium Los Alamos Vineyard is 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County, parallel to the region’s unusual east-west coastal range, whose valleys usher wind and fog across the vines each day.

Perhaps most notable for its soil, Los Alamos is comprised almost entirely of sand. The soil heats up quickly, initiating bud beak earlier than neighbouring sites and affording the grapes more time to develop their signature concentrated flavours.

Extremely porous, the sand allows water to drain more rapidly, letting us curtail vine growth earlier in the season—right after berry set—which translates to smaller grape clusters with more concentrated flavour.

Seaglass pursue environmental and sustainable farming, from conscientious water use to recycling. A supporter of the Surfrider Foundation they are proud to work with like-minded organisations who share a commitment to preserving the coastline, protecting marine wildlife and nurturing the earth for generations to come.
