Nereida
An interesting blend using Treixadura – the main grape of the Ribeiro region (adjacent to Rias Baixas in the far north west of Spain) – Torrontes and Palomino.
Pazo do Mar’s Ribeiro winery was opened in 2002 as the result of a family involvement in wine making spanning more than 30 years. Respecting and adoring secular Ribeiro traditions but with an innovative and modern view of the future they search of the perfect balance between traditional and modern production processes giving their wines the freshness and personality that the contemporary customer demands.
Awards: 90 Points, Highly Recommended – Decanter, Dec 2023
Decanter’s tasting panel commented “… Galician whites must surely be among the best performers across all price points. It is interesting to note that three of the wines awarded 90 points are under £15 (rrp)… there is still value to be found.” This is one of them.
Light and delicate with hints of floral notes and citrus in the bouquet and palate.
As the label suggests, a good accompaniment to seafood.
“Aromatic, talc and floral notes. Orange and peach on the palate, fresh and youthful, with a lightly textured finish. Well-balanced and great value.” Decanter, Dec 2023
About the Producer
Pazo do Mar
Pazo do Mar’s Rías Baixas winery is located in Arbo, Pontevedra and dedicated to the Albariño grape variety.
The concept of this winery is “Vino de Pago” or wine made exclusively with grapes provided by a single estate or property, the high quality is due to the professional management of the vineyard and its uniformed quality.
The vineyard of 18ha dates from 2002 is planted on a novel and unique single trellis system, opposed to the typical arbor system of the area, which gives us an important differentiation in quality.
The Godello wine is made at Adegas Pazo das Tapias – founded in 2006 when the Mendez family acquired the winery. Pazo das Tapias is located in the middle of its own vineyard, probably the best vineyards of the Monterrei D.O. in seniority and quality.
Grapes from their own vineyard of 10ha are supplemented with those from 60 external growers whose production is directly controlled by the winery through long-term contracts.
The vineyard has two different and visably distinct types of soil: a sandy hillside planted with the white variety Godello where the bright reflections from ground quartz maximize the concentration of fruit; and the sedimentary area planted with the red Mencia where there is a perfect phenolic maturity which indicates the great potential for development.
